Hemp Biofibre Insulation

By Hemspan®

Why Hemp?

There is no building fabric that is quite as versatile nor as sustainable as hemp fibre.

There are a range of applications in which hemp fibre can be applied to your building project, the most common and traditional applications being a wet hempcrete mix that is then applied using a pouring or spraying technique. Then there is the conventional uses of pre-casted blocks and prefabricated panel systems that are becoming ever more advanced.

In its final form, you can expect a non-combustible, permeable and hygrothermal building material that is naturally sound, damp and pest resistant. Even after manufacturing, the materials still boasts negative embodied carbon and contains minimal Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) making for a clean, safe and sustainable multifaceted material.

A well designed building envelopes that is done to a hemp specific dynamic model meet or in some cases, even exceed the Passive House standards. Due to being a medium-to-low density material,  a typical 300-400mm wall is sufficient in meeting the requirements of the Building Regulations (Part L) for  insulation in residential buildings. However, the extra  performance brought about by Hemps thermal mass is not  accounted for in the Building Regulations requirements,  meaning the fabric often outperforms its insulation (U) value, resulting in truly optimised efficiency.

Depending on the method and detail of construction - projects that use Hemp Insulation can expect to naturally retain an ambient indoor temperature of approx. 16-18⁰C all year round regardless of weather and with little-to-no mechanical input required.
